Indian-origin barrister gets key post

London: Prominent barrister of Indian-origin Kalyani Kaul, who has handled high-profile cases in the U.K., has been appointed a Recorder by Queen Elizabeth and will soon preside over hearings in county courts.

The 49-year-old Kalyani, who was the third highest paid barrister in terms of legal aid payments in 2005, has been practising law in Britain for the last 26 years. She studied Law in the London School of Economics (LSE).

Major cases handled by her include government of Rwanda vs Munyaneza, an extradition case against the government of Rwanda earlier this year relating to charges of genocide.

Ms. Kalyani, who specialises in serious crime cases, has handled the case relating to the Chohan murders in 2005, when five members of the family were kidnapped and murdered. It was the longest murder trial at the Old Bailey.

Ms. Kalyani is the daughter of well-known journalists Mahendra Kaul and Rajni Kaul, both of whom worked for long years with the Voice of America (VoA) and British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The post of Recorder is a fee paid post and there is no minimum sitting requirement. As a Recorder, Ms. Kalyani will prepare cases for trial and preside over hearings in county courts.

A Recorder is also considered for authorisation to sit as Deputy High Court Judges in the Chancery and the Queen’s Bench Divisions of the High Court and sit in the Royal Courts of Justice or county courts (specialist civil jurisdiction).

Ms. Kalyani also represented Bachan Kaur Athwal, the oldest woman to be tried for murder, relating to an ‘honour killing’ in which she (aged 70) was supposed to have taken her daughter-in-law to the Punjab and had her murdered. She also represented Anthony Sawoniuk in relation to his trial for Second World War Crimes (multiple murders), tried in the U.K. in 1999 in relation to offences in Belarus in 1942.

For 38 days, Reena Kaushal Dharmshaktu, a mountaineer and outdoor instructor based in Delhi, along with seven other women skied for eight to 10 hours a day, traversing a 915km path through one of the coldest and most desolate regions of the world. ( Watch Video )

At 11.09pm on Wednesday, Reena reached the trademark mirrorball in the middle of nowhere that marks the geographic South Pole, becoming the first Indian woman to ski to the southern-most tip of the Earth.

"We're all incredibly happy and we're standing here, seven women at the bottom of the planet with the biggest smiles on our faces right now," Felicity Aston, the leader of the eight-women Commonwealth team, said in a podcast announcing that the expedition had reached the South Pole.

The women, from seven countries, were part of the Kaspersky Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition mounted to mark the 60th anniversary of the Commonwealth.

For 38-year-old Reena, who had edged out 116 compatriots to get the right to represent India in the expedition, it marked a unique achievement. Her mountaineer husband, Love Raj Singh Dharmshaktu, climbed Mt Everest in May this year. "That is the highest point on Earth and I will be skiing to South Pole, the lowest point on Earth," Reena had written in the expedition's webpage. Her husband, who incidentally has climbed Mt Everest thrice, told TOI, "It's a big achievement and we are all so excited about it. We all are proud of her."

On how he compared his climbing feats with that of his wife, Dharmshaktu, employed with the Border Security Force, said, "Both have their own challenges. You can't compare them. But reaching the South Pole is an incredible feat."

On Reena's preparations for the event, he said: "We had to run around a lot for raising the money. Kaspersky (an internet firm) was to sponsor about 80-85% of the money and we had to arrange the rest. Our first priority now is to return the loan," he added.

It was an arduous journey through the incredibly cold, all-white expanse of the continent, where the team had to negotiate crevasses hundreds of metres deep. The expedition left behind nothing in the icy wilderness, even carrying back human waste on 80kg sledges that each member towed.

It's currently summer in the Antarctica, so the team had daylight for 24 hours. "Bewitched by Antarctica," Reena had tweeted four days ago. After reaching the Pole, she called up her sister in Delhi, Shilpa, to share the excitement. "She said she was absolutely thrilled to have achieved her goal. We talked for a long time," said Shilpa.

Reena did her mountaineering training from the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling and has been on IMF expeditions to Gangotri 1, the first ascent of Argan Kangri, Fluted Peak, Stock Kangri, Phawararang, Mt Nun and others.

She is currently a freelance instructor with the US-headquartered National Outdoor Leadership Schools (NOLS) that teaches outdoor skills to people. Her father was an Armyman and during his posting in Darjeeling, Reena fell in love with the mountains. "Being from an Army background, we used to go for long walks with our father which set the groundwork for my tilt towards mountaineering," said Reena, who now wants to spread awareness about conserving the environment when she comes back to India in the second week of January, via Peru and London.

Mota Singh, the UK’s first Sikh and Asian Judge, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday, receiving the highest civilian honour for his services to the administration of justice and community relations.

“I really feel humbled. It is such a great honour. It means recognition of the services rendered to the British community at large,” an elated Mota Singh, who is also a Queen’s Counsel, told PTI.

His decision to wear a white turban in court, instead of a wig, came to be seen as a sign of a multicultural Britain. A Ramgarhia Sikh, 79year-old Mota Singh was raised and educated in Nairobi, Kenya. In 1954, he moved to England to compete the remaining part of his study in law. He joined the English Bar in 1967 and within months, developed a successful practice in civil law. He will now be known as Sir Mota Singh.

Mota Singh, who had said that he never experienced racism in Britain when he became the country’s first Sikh and Asian judge in 1982, was knighted by Queen Elizabeth in her New Year Honours List 2010.

Norman Ernest Borlaug (March 25, 1914 – September 12, 2009)[1] was an American agronomist, humanitarian, and Nobel laureate who has been deemed the father of the Green Revolution.[2] Borlaug was one of only six people to have won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal.[3] He was also a recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian honour.

Borlaug received his Ph.D. in plant pathology and genetics from the University of Minnesota in 1942. He took up an agricultural research position in Mexico, where he developed semi-dwarf, high-yield, disease-resistant wheat varieties.

Nobel Peace Prize

For his contributions to the world food supply, Borlaug was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970. Norwegian officials notified his wife in Mexico City at 4:00 am, but Borlaug had already left for the test fields in the Toluca valley, about 40 miles (65 km) west of Mexico City. A chauffeur took her to the fields to inform her husband. According to his daughter, Jeanie Laube, "My mom said, 'You won the Nobel Peace Prize,' and he said, 'No, I haven't', ... It took some convincing ... He thought the whole thing was a hoax".[10] He was awarded the prize on December 10. In his Nobel Lecture the following day, he speculated on his award: "When the Nobel Peace Prize Committee designated me the recipient of the 1970 award for my contribution to the 'green revolution', they were in effect, I believe, selecting an individual to symbolize the vital role of agriculture and food production in a world that is hungry, both for bread and for peace".[23]

What is Bharat Ratna ?

Bharat Ratna (Hindi: भारत रत्न, translates to Jewel of India[1] or Gem of India[2] in English) is India's highest civilian award, awarded for the highest degrees of national service. This service includes artistic, literary, and scientific achievements, as well as "recognition of public service of the highest order."[3] Unlike knights, holders of the Bharat Ratna carry no special title nor any other honorifics, but they do have a place in the Indian order of precedence.

The award was established by the first President of India, Rajendra Prasad, on 2 January 1954.[4] Along with other major national honours, such as the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, the awarding of the Bharat Ratna was suspended from 13 July 1977 to 26 January 1980.

The honour has been awarded to forty one people, a list which includes two non-Indians and a naturalized Indian citizen. Originally, the specifications for the award called for a circular gold medal carrying the state emblem and motto, among other things. It is uncertain if a design in accordance with the original specifications was ever made. The actual award is designed in the shape of a peepul leaf and carries with the words "Bharat Ratna", inscribed in Devanagari script. The reverse side of the medal carries the state emblem and motto. The award is attached to a two-inch wide ribbon, and was designed to be worn around the recipient's neck.

Meghnad Saha was born on the 6th of October 1893 to a village grocer. He saw with extreme poverty from his early days. Admitted in the primary school of village, he had to attend the family shop and manage time to go to school. After primary education, he went to a middle school seven miles away from his village. He started staying in a doctor’s house near the school and worked there to manage the cost of living. He ranked first in the Dhaka middle school test and got admitted into the Dhaka Collegiate School. Meghnad then decided to do research in Physics and Applied Mathematics. Slowly his area of expertise turned to Astrophysics. He put forward an “ionization formula” explaining the presence of the spectral lines. The formula also enabled an astronomer to know the temperature, pressure and other aspects of the interior of the sun or any other star. The formula proved to be a break through in astrophysics.

Harivansh Rai "Bachchan" Shrivastav (November 27, 1907– January 18, 2003) was a distinguished Hindi poet of Chhayavaad literary movement (romantic upsurge) of early 20th century Hindi literature. He is best known for his early work Madhushala (मधुशाला)^[1]. He is also the father of Bollywood superstar, Amitabh Bachchan.

Born in a Kayastha family, in the village of Babupatti (Raniganj) in the district of Pratapgarh, U.P. near Allahabad in the United Provinces (modern Uttar Pradesh). He was the eldest son of Pratap Narayan Shrivastav and Saraswati Devi. He was called bachchan (meaning 'child-like') at home. He received his formal schooling in a municipal school and followed the family tradition of attending Kayastha Paathshaalas (कायस्थ पाठशाला) to learn Urdu as the first step to a career in law. He later studied at the Allahabad University and Banaras Hindu University. In this period, he came under the influence of the independence movement, then under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

Realizing that this was not the path he wanted to follow, he went back to university. However from 1941 to 1952 he taught in the English Department at the Allahabad University and after that he spent the next two years at Cambridge University doing his doctoral thesis on W.B. Yeats. It was then, that he used ‘Bachchan’ as his last name instead of Srivastava. Harivanshrai’s thesis got him his PhD at Cambridge. He is the second Indian to get his doctorate in English literature from Cambridge. After returning to India he again took to teaching and also served at All India Radio, Allahabad.

In 1926, at the age of 19, Bachchan married his first wife, Shyama, who was then 14 years old. However she died ten years later in 1936 after a long spell of TB at just 24 years of age. Bachchan again married, Teji Suri, a Sikh, in 1941. They had two sons, Amitabh and Ajitabh.

In 1955, Harivanshrai shifted to Delhi to join the External Affairs Ministry as an officer on Special duty and during the period of 10 years that he served he was also associated with the evolution of Hindi as the official language. He also enriched Hindi through his translations of major writings. As a poet is famous for his poem Madhushala (a bar selling alcoholic drinks). Besides Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, he will also be remembered for his Hindi translations of Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Othello and also the Bhagvad Gita. However in Nov 1984 he wrote his last poem ‘Ek November1984’ on Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Harivanshrai was nominated to the Indian Rajya Sabha in 1966 and received the Sahitya Akademi award three years later. In 1976 he was honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his immense contribution to Hindi literature. He was also honoured with the Saraswati Samman, the Sovietland Nehru Award and the Lotus Award of the Afro-Asian writers’ conference, for his unique contribution to the world of letters. But if ever asked to introduce himself, he had a simple introduction: Mitti ka tan, masti ka man, kshan-bhar jivan — mera parichay. (A body of clay, a mind full of play, a moment’s life - that is me.).

Bachchan died on January 18, 2003, at the age of 95, as a result of various respiratory ailments.^[2] His widow Teji Bachchan died four years later in 2007, at the age of 90.

Devaki Nandan Khatri (1861-1913) was the first author of mystery novels in Hindi. He wrote Chandrakanta, Chandrakanta Santati, Kajar ki Kothari, Narendra-Mohini, Kusum Kumari, Virendra Veer, Gupt Godna, Katora Bhar Khoon and Bhootnath. He is also known as Babu Devakinandan Khatri. Bhootnath was incomplete and completed by his son, Durga Prasad Khatri, who also wrote the concluding volumes of Bhootnath saga as Rohtasmath

Khatri was born at Samastipur, Bihar. After his earlier education he moved to Tekari Estate in Gaya. He became an employee of the Raja of Benares. He started a printing press called "Lahari" and started a Hindi monthly, "Sudarshan", in 1898. There is also a book shop with the name Lahari Book Depot. Lahari Press is situated at Ram Katora Road, near Ram Katora Crossing, Varanasi, India. Durga Prasad Khatri's son, Kamlapati Khatri, and grandson "Sonny". The various works of Khatri and his son are still published by Lahari Press.

Khatri made a strong contribution to the learning of the Hindi language by the people of the times. People were so mesmerised by the works Chandrakanta, Chandrakanta Santiti and Bhootnath that they started to learn Hindi just to be able to read the works. Khatri did not write any work at one go and then publish the same. He used to write "bayaans" - chapters - on the run from the British and these were published and distributed widely. People would enthusiastically await the new "bayaans" and congregate around those who could read Hindi to hear the latest exploits in the continuing saga.

An AIYYAR (male) or AIYARRA (female) is a spy, in the service of a king, who specializes in making disguises. A TILISM is a kind of maze containing many secret locations, passages and prisons. Words like these were contributed to the Hindi language by the popular novels by Khatri, the first author of mystery novels in Hindi.

Khatri had a home called Khatri Haveli in Ramapura, Varanasi. He was living in Musakhand area when he was writing Chandrakanta.

Munshi Premchand was one of the greatest literary figures of modern Hindi literature. He lost his father when he was 16 years old. Left responsible for his stepmother and siblings, he earned five rupees a month tutoring a lawyers child. Premchand passed his matriculation exam with great effort and took up a teaching position, with a monthly salary of 18 rupees. While working, he studied privately and passed his intermediate and BA examinations Later, he worked as the deputy sub- inspector of schools in what was then the United Provinces. In 1910, he was hauled up by the DM in Jairpur for this anthology of short stories Soz-e-Watan (Dirge of the Nation), which was labeled seditious. His book was banned, & all the copies burnt. Initially Premchand wrote in Urdu under the name of Nawabrai. However, when his novel was confiscated by the British, he started writing under the pseudonym Premchand. He rose to become one of the most popular literary figures in India.

Dr. R.V. Nandedkar Contributor for Radiation Sources

Dr. Rajendra Vasant Nandedkar did his M.Sc. from Indore University (Now Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya) in 1969. He got his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Science Banglore in 1981.

Dr. Nandedkar in early part of his career contributed in the field of effect of radiation on materials for fast breeder and fusion reactors. He set up a laboratory Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research at Kalpukkam to use low energy particle accelerators, to simulate radiation damage in materials for reactors. He has made a pioneering contributor in radiation damage in metallic glasses.

At Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore where India’s first synchrotion radiation sources Indus-1 & Indust-2 are built, a beam line was designed, installed, commissioned on Indus-1 and research papers were published by a team under his leadership. For Indus-2 source his team & he designed fabricated, installed and successfully commissioned prototype front ends. These fronts are now multiplied which has resulted in a substantial savings in foreign exchange. He was also leading a team to scientist and engineers design, installation commissioning of few beam lines on Indus-2.

He also installed first electron-microscope laboratory and its sample preparation in Madhya Pradesh. Using these microscopes, he has contributed in the field of nano-materials.

During his career he has published more than 115 research 2 technology paper in reputed international journals, and also published popular articles in Hindi.

Q (ALH) What was the inner inspiration insisted you to be an IAS?

Or

Could you specify the reason for being an IAS?

Ans. (RC sir) I did not know too much about life in the IAS (my father was in the State of UP Transport Department, a person respected for his basic integrity, simplicity and overall decency) except that my father was enamored by the service. Some of his IAS officer friends were people who were held in very high esteem and legends were spun around them-names like IDN Sahi, BD Sanwal, Hasan Zaheer etc. There was a sense that in the IAS you could contribute to national building while being respected in society. This was a heady mixture. And so it was my life?s first ambition to get into the IAS.

Q (ALH) What was the dream of your parent about you?

Ans. (RC sir) My father's dream would be fulfilled if one day I were to become the Governor of some State in India or if I were to become an Advisor to the Prime Minister of the country.

Q (ALH) What is your educational profile ?

Ans. (RC sir) I studied in La Martiniere College in Lucknow upto Class XI. Then I went to St Stephens College, Delhi to do a BSc Honours in Mathematics. I won the Sudarshan Kumar Memorial Prize for the best all-rounder, was Secretary of the Mathematics Society and managed to get into the Squash Team of the College, apart from representing College in the Quiz Team in various Cultural Festivals.

As a mid-service professional I applied for the Government Colombo Plan trainings and got rejected for all due to reservations that year. So I applied on my own to Harvard and got admission. Then I applied to the World Bank and got scholarship through the Joint Japan/ World Bank Fund.

Q (ALH) How do you feel when you are called IAS?

Ans. (RC sir) I feel ok. But I know that there is a perception issue there. When I returned from Harvard, I dropped the IAS from my visiting card, as I thought it was not an asset and that it was not necessary. A couple of years later I realized my mistake-the IAS is a huge asset in India and it is still much respected!

Q (ALH) Are you a sportsman? Which are your favorite sports?

Ans. (RC sir) I play badminton regularly. It keeps me fit physically and ensures that I have no frustrations to take to work. On Sundays I play golf. In badminton I am a good, club(+) level. In golf I am club(-) level.

Q (ALH) I have read more about soul, mind and Body what are these for you?

Ans. (RC sir) I feel that in life there is nothing which is perfectly correct for all-to each his own. But to be able to align yourself with the world, your community, your family and yourself is the key to global peace and happiness (sarvamangal-mangaleya). Hence soul, mind, body alignment along the principles of sat-chit-anand or satyam-shivam-sundaram is my understanding about the right thing to do. This is close to the concept of the Middle Path advocated by the Buddha.

Q (ALH) What was your impact as Indian in Harvard Business School ?

Ans. (RC sir) Excellent! I was the oldest student in class. But because of my practical working experience I made up with insight what I lacked in terms of business training. I got A+ in all my Business School courses. The highlight was a case study in Service Management taught by James Haskett, an authority on this subject. I took a contrarian position in class, and was the only one out of 120 students who held his own and defended his position in a business case study. I got a standing ovation from the class. After the class, I walked back to my apartment. When I opened my e-mail, there was a message from the Professor waiting for me, ?Raghav, congratulations for steering the discussion so effectively!?

Q (ALH) How do you dream the word Scratch my soul?

Ans. (RC sir) It was purely something that stemmed from deep down in my soul, that society should become ultimately better!

Padma Bhushan Shri D. R. Mehta, a top bureaucrat, is a law graduate who also studied at Royal Institute of Public Administration, London (UK) and Alfred Sloan School of Management, MIT, Boston (USA).

Shri Mehta entered the Indian Administrative Service in 1961. He has held several key level positions both in Govt. of Rajasthan and Govt. of India. He retired from active service as the Chairman of Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Regulator of the capital market in India after holding this post for seven years upto 2002. Before that, Shri Metha was the Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India and the Director General of Foreign Trade, Govt. of India. Still earlier he served the Government of India and the State Government of Rajasthan on various important key assignments.

On the social side, Shri Mehta set up, in 1975, Bhagwan Mahaveer Viklang Sahayata Samiti, Jaipur, an NGO, which provides, free of charge, artificial limbs, calipers and other aids and appliances to the handicapped. In the last three decades, the Society, of which Shri Metha is the Founder and Patron, has benefited around 9,00,000 handicapped including those in 18 other countries.

Shri D. R. Mehta established the Prakrit Bharti Academy, a cultural and literary organization. The Academy has already published 200 books, some of which have been reviewed all over the world. Shri Mehta is also running a center for the leprosy patients and is also serving as Chairman of Gandhi Smarak Nidhi (Rajasthan), which is a branch of Gandi Smarak Nidhi at the national level. The organization works for propagation of Gandhian ideas, Harijan uplift and support for leprosy patients.

Sharad Joshi (awarded padma shri in 1990) is a Hindi poet, writer, satirist and a dialogue and scriptwriter in Hindi films and television. Madhya Pradesh Government has instituted an award in his memory titled, ‘Sharad Joshi Samman’, given each year to individuals for outstanding achievement in the field of writing and citation .

Sharad Joshi started his career writing for Newspapers and radio in Indore, it was where he met Irfana Siddiqi, (later Irfana Sharad), a known theater artist in 1958. They had three daughters, Bani, Richa and Neha Sharad. Neha Sharad is a television actor.

His short satirical articles were published in prominent Hindi newspapers and magazines like Nayi Dunia, Dharmyug, Ravivar, Saptahik Hindustan, Kadambari, Gyanoday etc. His daily column Pratidin in Navbharat Times was published for 7 years and played a major role in high circulation of the newspaper.

His book, 'Jeep par Sawar Illian', (Leeches riding the Jeep), is a comic satire on government officials riding in their official vehicles.

In all he wrote 18 books, Parikrama, Kisi Bahane, Tilasm, Jeep par Sawar Illian, Raha Kinare Baith, Meri Shreshth Rachnaye, Dusri Satah, Yatha Sambhav, Yatra Tatra Sarvatra, Yatha Samay, Ham Bhrashtan ke Bhrasht Hamare, Pratidin in three parts.

Mokshagundam Vishveshwarya was born on August 28, 1860 and Muddenahalli(a village) in Chikballapur Taluk, Kolar district, Mysore (Now Karnataka). Vishveshwarya completed his lower secondary course at Chikballapur. After completing his high-school, he joined the central college having stood first in engineering, it was not difficult for him to enter the Bombay Government Service. He joined the engineer's kader as an Assistant Engineer. The first test of his ability was when he was entrusted with the construction of SYPHON on the river Panjra at Dashari, a village 35 miles from Dhulia.

Visveswaraiya proved his mettle in the world scenario. This was the inspiring force that led to the idea of building a world-class technical institute. This is how Vishveshwarya Institute was born.

At the age of Twenty-Five it seems that I have now lived one-third of the era before I meet my final destiny. I think I have gained experiences in almost every sphere of a complete life cycle. These include years of my childhood when I was around five when no later I realized that though having the most adorable parents in the world we were not financially strong to fulfill some of my typical childish dreams and demands. Though I am extremely thankful to my father who himself was unable to get the higher level of education yet made it possible for all his kids to achieve admission amongst the top ranked schools of the state. On the other hand my mother didn’t just tried but yes she proved as a faithful life partner by sacrificing all her dreams and desires on the part of fulfilling the basic needs of the family.

With the prevailing conditions, after a decade down the line I was never ready to accept the fact that I could become an engineer in a few years later. I always thought of just giving a helping hand to my father’s small business so that he was not alone to bear all the tensions of our lives. But thanks to all my Uncles who not only gave me a moral support as an elder father but also acted as a financial backbone of my four years of the engineering degree.

During the time I was in my final semesters of the college it never stuck to my mind that I would be landing to San Jose, California in the near future to do the MS (Master of Science) degree at San Jose State University (SJSU). Eventually the thought process for the same started just a year before my graduation. To add on I started dreaming about the life and people residing at the opposite end of the globe. Each time I took a step towards the underlying application procedure the dream seemed more real and equally fascinating. Finally after days of long await I heard from five different universities that offered me an admission.

Having decided where to go now was the time of actual drama the VISA procedure. Though not as financially sound as required for the process yet I would thank almighty Allah and my parents who blessed me so graciously that I was granted the VISA with an interview that lasted for just 45 seconds. I cannot describe those feelings when she said “You are granted the VISA for USA". It was like being on the top of the world for that single moment.

Leaving behind home and the family was an unattended feeling of sorrows and depression. Studying over here was altogether a different experience. Being in Silicon Valley surrounded by worlds top notch industries has always attracted students from all over the world to pursue their higher education over here. San Jose State University what the university is known by not only provides excellent infrastructure but also many of the faculties and teaching staff either currently working in the industries or have enormous amount of experience to share with the students.

Though being admitted to such a good institution completing Master of Science degree never looked easy. As it was just not the study it was work and study. Each one of us here in the US got to make some living while we pursue the degree in order to take off loads from our parents back. Meanwhile at the end of my two years of preparation for the course I landed up to an internship in one of the well known chip manufacturing companies over here named Analog Devices. With the passage of time and the grace of God I was offered a fulltime position as a Product Engineer in the same company.

Now when I try to look back it seems as if the past three years have passed in a sheer blink of my eyes. Being thousands of miles away from home I now have a new house building around me. Having being accomplished the most awaited dream of the life I now realize I have lost some of those moments of my life that were the integral part for this success.

We often come across words such as “I wish I was the person” and “I wish I was the lucky one”. Yes these are the words that are expressed when someone close to your heart has moved far apart from you, just because you were not there for the time. These are the times when you are surrounded with nothing but the memories that keep you refreshing with the thought that the person is till somewhere around you.

This is how I have started living these days………..

मुंबई. ऑस्कर अवॉर्ड विजेता फिल्म ‘स्लमडॉग मिलियनेयर’ के बाल कलाकार अजहरुद्दीन ने अपने दिवंगत पिता मोहम्मद इस्माइल की आखिरी इच्छा पूरी कर दी है। इस्माइल का सपना था कि उनका बेटा किसी बड़ी फिल्म में काम करे। पिता की हाल में मौत के बाद अजहरुद्दीन (10) ने इसे साकार कर दिखाया है। वह हॉलीवुड के विख्यात अभिनेता एंथनी हॉपकिन्स के साथ एक फिल्म में काम करेगा।

बतौर बाल कलाकार अजहरुद्दीन की यह दूसरी फिल्म होगी। ‘लॉर्ड ओवेंस लेडी’ नाम की इस फिल्म के लिए जब अजहरुद्दीन से प्रोड्यूसर ने मुलाकात की, तब इस्माइल तपेदिक की बीमारी के चलते बिस्तर पकड़ चुके थे। अजहरुद्दीन की मां शमीम बी कहती हैं, ‘पति की बीमारी के अलावा हमें बेटे के स्कूल की पढ़ाई की भी चिंता थी।’ लेकिन इस्माइल ने बेटे को फिल्म का ऑफर स्वीकारने के लिए प्रेरित किया।

शमीम बी के अनुसार, ‘अजहर के पापा ने मुझसे कहा कि मेरी बीमारी की चिंता मत करो। मुझे कुछ भी हो जाए, अजहर इस फिल्म का हिस्सा होना चाहिए।’

पिछले शुक्रवार को इस्माइल के इंतकाल के बाद परिवार ने अजहर को उसकी दूसरी फिल्म में काम करने की अनुमति दे दी। अजहर ने भास्कर-डीएनए से कहा, ‘मैं बहुत उत्साहित हूं। मुझे मुबारकबाद दो। पापा चाहते थे कि मैं बड़ा आदमी बनूं। मुझे उनकी कमी खल रही है।’ स्लमडॉग में लतिका का रोल करने वाली रुबीना भी ‘लॉर्ड ओवेंस लेडी’ में काम करेंगी। फिल्म की शूटिंग ब्रिटेन के वेल्स और भारत में नवंबर के महीने में होगी।

Mr. Kayam helped me in learning of those decade software’s and he trained me in Electronic Hindi Typing. It is to note that in 1994 Hindi Computer Typists were rarely found. Chandresh Prasad Saxena, Professor of Fine Arts had passed very hard days of his life, discussing his son Mr. Ravi Saxena , (Registrar-IPS Academy) he said that he was dedicated to his work since his childhood. On the bank of the river kshipra he use to make sketches with old pen brush called barru & ink.

Born on 14 August 1924 in Ujjain , his schooling at Dhar. Higher Studies at J J School of Fine Arts Mumbai. Here he was awarded Gold Medal & won Sir C V Deshmukh Award. In 1948 he was granted scholarship by Central Govt. of Rs.2500/-. After that he joined Shanti Niketan & learns in the guidance of Acharya Nandlal bose.

He sacrificed his youth, he had no money to study. His paintings make him to pay school & college fees. Many times he took only boil Methi leaves (Fenugreek) and drink the soup to live in Bombay. After coming from Shantiniketan in the year 1950 he joined Kasturba Trust, Indore & came in contact to Shri Vinoba Bhave . At a Cermony when Dr. Prasad visited and he asked what Chandresh is paid the studio said nothing , Dr. Prasad wondered ! he asked questions with the studio owner. The owner said it is very hard to run this institute and it is too impossible to make Chandresh payment. If I will say you will wonder that a salary stiphined of
Rs.400/- 1950’s was awarded by President of India Dr. Rajendra Prasad directing government of India to pay him full amount with arrears at that time he received Rs.4200/- which is worth for him.

He was the room partner of Syed Haider Raza (Padma Shree (1981) Sayed Haider Raza, an artist who does not paint what he sees, but gives his own inner vision to the memories of the perceptible and the imperceptible). The both room partner are class mate and reside at Wadia Loudge at Vilay Parle Mumbai.

On visit in 1956 at Kasturba Gram Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Prime Minister of India with Mrs. Sarojani Naidu, Rajcopalachari & Devdas Gandhi asked who decorated this place with art work, Secretary Shyamlalji replied Artist Chandreshji. After knowing his name Pt. Nehru showed his willingness to meet Chandreshji. He was busy for his exhibition, as soon as he received the message he ran to Indore Residency on bicycle, after meeting Pt. Nehru awarded him Rs.1000/- and gifted silver glass to him.

After a long struggle of in his life he joined Govt. Lalit Kala Institute, Opposite Boliya Sarkar Tower, Indoe and retired as Principal.

His creative Kshlok at Mahankal Temple – Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru continuously watched for an hour. In the year 1958 first Kalidas Samaroh was organized at Ujjain under the leadership of Pandit Suryanarayan Vyas. His Painting got first prize & purchased by Kalidas Academy Ujjain. After than , Every year his when Kalidas celebrations are held, His painting of Kalidas was put for Pushp on dias. In the year 1962 he won Calcutta Academy Award. His Biography was Published in Who’s Who in Arts & Antiques England & Awarded Gold Medal by Academics Italia. His painting can be seen at Kalidas Academy ujjain. His students are leading artists of India. In addition to the impact of his articulate creativity on the art of India for all time to come, Chandresh Saxena impression on his students was immense and through them it suffused all over the country.

Amiq Hanfi(Urdu b.1928) is a well-known writer, critic and peot of Urdu. Though he started comprising poetry in 1952, Amiq Hanfi made his mark as a poet with his controversial long poem, Sindbad(1964),a poem in which he uses the legendry figure of Sindbad in the modern perspective and portrays him wandering in search of a new faith which leads him to Greek and Hindu mythology, thus symbolising the existence of the past in our beings,howsoever, we may desire to be liberated from it.
Born at Mhow Cantt (Distt. Indore (M.P.) Abdul Aziz Amiq Hanfi received his primary education at Indore and then studied at Dewas (M.P.) from where he passed his High School(1946) and Intermediate (1948) Examinations. Then, again, he went to Indore for higher education and took his M.A. Degree in Politics(1950) and History (1952). He began his career as a teacher. Later on in 1956 he got employed as a Hindi Script writer at All India Radio, Bhopal. He gradually rose to the position of Station Director, Which post he has held since 1977.
Amiq Hanfi started his literary career by writing in Urdu and Hindi simultaneously. His work which first came to be publised in book form was a collection of Hindi poems, entitled Sanson ka Sangit (1955). Apart from Sindbad,Amiq wrote another long poem, Salsala-tul-Jaras(1974), which is a unique experiment of employing Urdu free verse for rendering Nat (a poetic form written to culogise the Prophet) and expressing the relevance of the Quran and Hadith ( the sayings of the Prophet) in the context of the modern complex world. Amiq Hanfis other works are Sang Payrahan (Poetry-1958), Shab Gasht (Poetry 1969), Shajar-i-Sada(collection of Nazams 1975) in urdu and Aine Ka Chorus (Plays 1979) and Ustad Rajab Ali Khan (Biography) 1982 in Hindi.

Punyaslok Rajmata Ahilyadevi Holkar, called "Catherine the Great, Elizabeth, Margaret of India”,[1] (1725 - 1795, ruled 1767-1795) was a Holkar dynasty Queen of the Malwa kingdom, India, The 'Philosopher Queen'. She was born in the village of Chaundi in Tal.Jamkhed Dist.AhmednagarMaharashtra. She moved the capital to Maheshwar south of Indore on the Narmada River.
Ahilyadevi's husband Khanderao Holkar was killed in the battle of Kumher in 1754. Twelve years later, her father-in-law, Malhar Rao Holkar, died. She tried to protect her kingdom from Thugs, the plunderers. She personally led armies into battle. She appointed Tukojirao Holkar as the Chief of Army. She is also famous for justice, once she gave the order for killing her only son under the elephant feet for his punishable activities.
Rani Ahilyadevi was a great builder and patron of many Hindu temples which embellished Maheshwar and Indore. She also built temples and Dharmshala (Free lodging)at sacred sites outside her kingdom, at prominent religious places like Dwarka in Gujarat east to the Kashi Vishwanath Temple at Varanasi on the Ganges, Ujjain (M.P.), Nasik (Mh.), Parali baijnath (Ms.). Seeing the destroyed and desecrated temple in Somanath, Rani Ahilyadevi built a temple where Lord Shiva is still worshipped by Hindus.
Early life
Ahilyadevi was born on August 31, 1725 in the village of Chondi, in Ahmednagar district, Maharashtra. Her father, Mankoji Shinde, was the patil of the village, a member of the proud Dhangar community. Women then did not go to school, but Ahilyabai's father taught her to read and write.
Her entrance on to the stage of history was something of an accident: Malhar Rao Holkar, a commander in the service of the Peshwa Bajirao and lord of the Malwa territory, stopped in Chondi on his way to Pune and, according to legend, saw the eight-year-old Ahilyadevi at the temple service in the village. Recognising her piety and her character, he brought the girl to the Holkar territory as a bride for his son, Khande Rao.
Ruler
Ahilya devi’s husband was killed in battle in 1754. Twelve years later, her father-in-law, Malhar Rao died. From 1766 until her death in 1795, she ruled Malwa, trained in both administrative and military matters by Malhar Rao. A letter to her from Malhar Rao in 1765 illustrates the trust he had in her ability during the tempestuous battle for power in the 18th century:
"Proceed to Gwalior after crossing the Chambal. You may halt there for four or five days. You should keep your big artillery and arrangeforits ammunition as much as possible….On the march you should arrange for military posts being located for protection of the road."
Already trained to be a ruler, Ahilyadevi petitioned the Peshwa after Malhar’s death, and the death of her son, to take over the administration herself. Some in Malwa objected to her assumption of rule, but the army of Holkar was enthusiastic about her leadership. She had led them in person, with four bows and quivers of arrows fitted to the corners of the howdah of her favourite elephant. The Peshwa granted permission, and, with Tukoji Holkar (Malhar Rao's adopted son) as the head of military matters, she proceeded to rule Malwa in a most enlightened manner, even reinstating a Brahmin who had opposed her. Ahilyadevi never observed purdah but held daily public audience and was always accessible to anyone who needed her ear.
Among Ahilyadevi's accomplishments was the development of Indore from a small village to a prosperous and beautiful city; her own capital, however, was in nearby Maheshwar, a town on the banks of the Narmada river. She also built forts and roads in Malwa, sponsored festivals and gave donations for regular worship in many Hindu temples. Outside Malwa, she built dozens of temples, ghats, wells, tanks and rest-houses across an area stretching from the Himalayas to pilgrimage centres in South India. The Bharatiya Sanskritikosh lists as sites she embellished, Kashi, Gaya, Somnath, Ayodhya, Mathura, Hardwar, Kanchi, Avanti, Dwarka, Badrinarayan, Rameshwar and Jaganathpuri. Ahilyadevi also rejoiced when she saw bankers, merchants, farmers and cultivators rise to levels of affluence, but did not consider that she had any legitimate claim to any of that wealth, be it through taxes or feudal right. She must, in fact, have financed all her activities with the lawful gains obtained from a happy and prosperous land.
There are many stories of her care for her people. She helped widows retain their husbands’ wealth. She made sure that a widow was allowed to adopt a son; in fact, in one instance, when her minister refused to allow the adoption unless he was suitably bribed, she is said to have sponsored the child herself, and given him clothes and jewels as part of the ritual. To honour the memory of Ahilyadevi Holkar, in 1996 leading citizens of Indore instituted an award in her name to be bestowed annually on an outstanding public figure. The prime minister of India gave away the first award to Nanaji Deshmukh. The only time Ahilyadevi seems not to have been able to settle a conflict peacefully and easily was in the case of the Bhils and Gonds, "plunderers" on her borders; but she granted them waste hilly lands and the right to a small duty on goods passing through their territories. Even in this case, according to Malcolm, she did give "considerate attention to their habits".
Ahilyadevi’s capital at Maheshwar was the scene of literary, musical, artistic and industrial enterprise. She entertained the famous Marathi poet, Moropant and the shahir, Anantaphandi from Maharashtra, and also patronised the Sanskrit scholar, Khushali Ram. Craftsmen, sculptors and artists received salaries and honours at her capital, and she even established a textile industry in the city of Maheshwar.
Historians of the 19th and 20th centuries—Indian, English and American—agree that the reputation of Ahilyadevi Holkar in Malwa and Maharashtra was then, and is, even now, that of a saint. Nothing has ever been discovered by any researcher to discredit that. She was truly a magnificent woman, an able ruler and a great queen.

"This great ruler in Indore encouraged all within her realm to do their best, Merchants produced their finest cloths, trade flourished, the farmers were at peace and oppression ceased, for each case that came to the queens notice was dealt with severely. She loved to see her people prosper, and to watch the fine cities grow, and to watch that her subjects were not afraid to display their wealth, lest the ruler should snatch it from them. Far and wide the roads were planted with shady trees, and wells were made, and rest-houses for travellers. The poor, the homeless, the orphaned were all helped according to their needs. The Bhils who had long been the torment of all caravans, were routed fron their mountain fastnessesm and persuaded to settle down as honest farmers. Hindu and Musalman alike revered the famous Queen and prayed for her long life. Her last great sorrow was when her daughter became a Sati upon the death of Yashwantrao Phanse. Ahalya Bai was seventy years old when her long and splendid life closed. Indore long mourned its noble Queen, happy had been her reign, and her memory is cherished with deep reverence unto this day. Over the years, in independent India, the city of Indore, when compared to neighboring Bhopal, Jabalpur or Gwalior, has progressed dramatically: economically, through business and financial prowess, politically and in all possible ways cities are supposed to progress. In fact, the local population proudly states that they live in 'mini-Mumbai', a reference to the great metropolis pulsing 600 km away. The good deeds of Devi Ahilyabai, her dedication to religion and her policies are enriching the city even today! The faith and belief in the good vibes of Indore go to such an extent that local inhabitants say that if you have lived in Indore for a thousand days, you are unlikely to leave it! Long live Devi Ahilya!
